Former England international Paul Robinson has backed Danny Rose to be ‘outstanding’ for Newcastle United after signing on loan from Tottenham Hotspur.

Rose was unveiled as head coach Steve Bruce’s latest addition on the eve of Deadline Day, with the 29-year-old joining the Toon until the end of the campaign for £2million.

The Leeds United product did not have to wait long before earning his first taste of football in Black and White, with Bruce fielding Rose from the bench against Norwich City on February 1.

Though Bruce was without the full-back for our FA Cup Fourth Round Replay with Oxford United due to his late arrival, while the winter break has meant Rose’s wait for a maiden start will progress until our trip to Arsenal on Sunday.

Robinson expects Rose will have a lot to offer Bruce at both ends of the field once the boss can utilise his skill set, and feels the £18m-rated full-back made the right decision by forcing a move away from Spurs after falling out of favour in North London.

“I like Danny Rose,” Robinson told Football Insider. “I like the way he plays, I like his attitude. I think his honesty is refreshing. When he’s interviewed he’s very honest, very straightforward, and I like that about him.

“I think he’ll be an outstanding addition for Newcastle. I think he’s a very good left-back, I think he’s still got a lot to give attacking-wise and defensively.

“He’ll be a huge signing for them, a real coup to pull off a signing of somebody of that level. Maybe his opportunities were limited at Spurs, but sometimes that happens in football, so fair play to Danny Rose [for forcing a move away].”

Rose forced a move away from Tottenham after only starting one Premier League game under Jose Mourinho, who opted to omit the 29-cap England international from six matchday squads following his appointment in November.

Limited minutes left the experienced full-back disgruntled in North London and suggested following his temporary transfer that Mourinho did not offer him as many chances as he did his fellow defenders.

“I do feel I wasn’t given as much of a chance as everybody else in the backline,” Rose told BBC Radio 5 Live. “I did want to play for him.”

An uncertain future at Tottenham could see Rose leave permanently in the summer and potential suitors will not be limited after Paris Saint-Germain were credited with an interest.

PSG will monitor Rose during his loan spell in the North East, as they currently have the 29-year-old top of their wish list of replacements for Layvin Kurzawa should the Frenchman move away from the Parc des Princes at the close of the season.

In other Newcastle United news, the club are struggling to close a deal for a midfield wonderkid.
