Newcastle manager Steve Bruce is keen to sign Norwich City left-back Jamal Lewis this summer, a report from The Daily Mail has claimed.

Lewis enjoyed an impressive campaign for Norwich in the Premier League last season, but was unable to prevent the Canaries from suffering an immediate relegation back to the Championship, although it seems the 22-year-old could still get an opportunity in the top-flight in 2020/21.

According to the latest reports, Bruce is interested in a move to sign Lewis this summer, as he looks to strengthen his squad with new, homegrown signings over the coming months.

That however could be difficult for the club to do, particularly with Bruce being forced to work with a restricted budget this summer as a result of current circumstances at the club.

It was reported earlier in the window that Liverpool had seen a £10million offer for Lewis rejected, with Norwich said to be demanding a much higher fee.

Indeed, the Canaries are apparently confident about their chances of retaining Lewis beyond the current window, with three years remaining on his contract at Carrow Road, putting the club in a strong position to negotiate any offers that come.

With Liverpool seemingly getting that message loud and clear by going out and signing another left-back in the shape of Kostas Tsimikas from Olympiacos, it would be incredibly surprising if Newcastle were to now go out and succeed where the Premier League champions failed.

If by some miracle they were to be able to do that however, it would be an outstanding bit of business by the club, as both a show of strength from the Magpies off the pitch, and a very useful addition on it, given the ability Lewis has shown during his career with Norwich so far.
