Newcastle United are looking to hijack Fulham’s move to sign defender Omar Colley from Sampdoria, a report from Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb has claimed.

Having conceded ten goals in their opening three league games following promotion at the end of last season, Fulham are in desperate need of a new centre back, with Colley recently emerging as a potential target.

However, Magpies boss Steve Bruce is also keen to strengthen the centre of his defence before the window closes, and it seems that may have put the two clubs on a collision course over Colley.

According to the latest reports, Newcastle could potentially make a late move for Colley, as they look to beat their Premier League rivals in the race to sign the 27-year-old Gambian international.

Colley has made 57 appearances in all competitions for Sampdoria since joining from Genk back in 2018, and has two years remaining on his current contract, securing his future in Italy until the end of the 2021/22 season.

This therefore, could certainly be a useful signing for Newcastle to make if they are to pull it off.

Bruce clearly wants another centre back before the window closes, and it looks as though they would be getting a more than reliable option in Colley, whose top-flight experience would surely be beneficial.

Add to that the fact that as well as strengthening their own squad, Newcastle signing Colley would also prevent Fulham from improving theirs, putting the Cottagers under more pressure in the relegation battle, and potentially helping to give the Magpies  a bit more breathing space between themselves and the bottom three.
