Although the season has yet to end, the summer transfer window is on the horizon, and that’s always an intriguing prospect at Newcastle United. Far too often, we head into transfer season with a lot of expectation, and rarely does the reality match up.
In January, the arrival of Miguel Almiron suggested that the club were willing to spend big to land the right players, and that does bode well for the future of the club.
However, whether that will extend to Rafael Benitez’s wishes remains to be seen.
At 29-years-old, however, a move for him may not be deemed financially viable for the Magpies – with Mike Ashley apparently keen to focus on the recruitment of younger talent.
Our Verdict
It’s always been clear that Newcastle would want to sign him permanently, but clearly, this report suggests that Benitez is very keen to sign him in particular – and that could lead to further frustration between him and the board.
Rondon has enjoyed a fantastic season at Newcastle, and Benitez clearly views him as an important member of the team. Despite his age, at 29-years-old Rondon still has a few years left at the highest level – and there’s no reason why a lack of resale value sh0uld put Newcastle off.
It will be interesting to see whether we get any further news on this over the coming weeks, as that could give us an early look at whether the boss will stay.
