Report: £6.3m-rated man could still join Newcastle in the summer

|

A few days ago, reports suggested that Newcastle United would not be signing Jetro Willemsin the summer window.

However, reports from the Chronicle imply that these claims could be bogus, as the player could still be joining the club on a permanent basis.

The 25-year-old was having a mightily impressive first half of the season before his season was ended prematurely due to him rupturing his cruciate knee ligament against Chelsea earlier in the season, forcing the club to go after another left-back in Danny Rose in the January window.

German outlet Bild stated that Willems was not going to be purchased due to the fact he would be spending nine months on the sidelines after undergoing surgery, meaning he would be out until 2021.

Would you have signed Jetro Willems?

Not with the injury

Yes, he looked a top player

Despite this, “sources close to Willems” say that there has been no change to the original assessment which says he could be back playing by September, which would obviously impact Newcastle’s assessment on the player massively.

Before the injury occurred, the player was without a doubt one of the shining lights in the team, offering much to the side both offensively and defensively. In fact, despite only playing 19 out of the 29 games this season, he still has the second-highest amount of goal contributions in the whole side with four– two goals and two assists – with only Jonjo Shelvey’s five goals topping that.

If the reports are true about a Willems return in September, then the Magpies could potentially have a steal on their hands. It is said that £1om is enough to get the player permanently from Frankfurt; given that Danny Rose is likely to cost at least that, is 29, and has been less impressive than the Dutchman thus far, it seems like a really reasonable deal.

Fans loved what the £6.3m-rated (Transfermarkt) defender had to offer in the first half of the season, so this move could make a lot of sense if these reports are true.
