Opinion: West Ham win provided a springboard for Newcastle star to build on

|

Newcastle supporters have not had a lot to shout about this season so far. The Geordies have won just three games in the Premier League, although two of those came away at Tottenham and at home to Manchester United, however, things have not all been breezy.

At times this season, the Magpies have looked dire and devoid of ideas, with Steve Bruce coming under pressure from the fans at every turn. However, one man could be set to help him change that, and that man was an absolute star against West Ham on the weekend.

The man we’re talking about is obviously Jonjo Shelvey. The English midfielder only came into the starting eleven for the trip to West Ham because Sean Longstaff was sent off the previous weekend against Wolves, but Shelvey certainly made his inclusion count.

The former Liverpool man bagged the Magpies’ 3rd goal in the game, a goal that would turn out to be the winner, and that goal was Shelvey’s second goal of the Premier League season, making him the Geordies’ top goalscorer for the season so far (Premierleague.com).

Now, though, after his winner on the weekend and with two games left for Sean Longstaff to sit out owing to his ban, Newcastle fans can expect to see more of Shelvey and if he can keep up his performances and score a few more goals then he may find himself keeping Longstaff out for longer.

Should Shelvey start when Sean Longstaff returns?

Yes

No

It’s certainly a start for the midfield man given that he hasn’t been used an awful lot this season, before this weekend the 27-year-old had featured just five times and managed only 312 minutes (Transfermarkt), but now it could be time for him to really have a run in the side and show what he can do.
