Opinion: Maybe landing Newcastle’s latest target would help to ensure that Rafa stays

|

A major sticking point between Newcastle and Rafael Benitez has been their transfer policy. The Magpies’ lack of spending has been well documented, with Benitez having had to deal with a reduced budget in comparison to many of the other teams in the Premier League.

That’s, naturally, meant that the Reds have targeted players of a lesser quality than their rivals, and that’s hamstrung Benitez in pursuit of growth at St. James’ Park.

With the club still yet to tie down the manager to a new deal, one easy way of convincing him of the project would be to target some of the Premier League’s finest talent, and a recent report from the Daily Star has indicated exactly that.

Indeed, the Daily Star recently reported that Bournemouth ace David Brooks is a target of the Magpies – and that’s sure to turn Benitez’s head. It wouldn’t be an easy deal to get across the line, but if Newcastle were able to bring him in, that would certainly signal the club’s intentions.

Of course, Brooks has enjoyed a fantastic first season in the Premier League, with the young Englishman taking to life at the Vitality Stadium like a duck to water.

A fantastic attacker with bags of energy and pace, he’s helped to transform Eddie Howe’s team moving forward. With 7 goals and 5 assists this term, there’s no denying his impact for the Cherries.

At 21-years-old, he’s a player with his best years ahead of him, and in truth, if he continues on his current trajectory, it’s easy to see him going to the very top of the English game. In time, then, a top side is sure to come in for him – and Newcastle making their move now would cement their desire to get to that point.

We’ve spent too much time targeting mediocre talent. Brooks has all the makings of a top player, and a move for him – in addition to Miguel Almiron’s January arrival – would serve to further highlight how Mike Ashley is changing.
