According to Football Insider, Newcastle United are ready to offer Jacob Murphy a new contract at the club.

Indeed, the 25-year-old has enjoyed something of a renaissance this season sparked from an impressive performance in September’s win over Morecambe. Operating as right-wing back, Murphy is enjoying arguably his most sustained run in the starting XI since joining the club from Norwich, even scoring against Wolves.

Murphy is one of many who sees his deal run out in 2021 but, as per the report, those behind the scenes at St. James’ Park are ready to try and extend that in an attempt to stop Rangers making a move for him on January 1st. In theory, the Scottish giants could offer him a pre-contract at that point.

While the idea of seeing Murphy in the first-team on a consistent basis would have been an odd one a few months ago, he has proven a versatile enough option to keep him around. That’s not to say Newcastle shouldn’t look to strengthen their options at right-back amid links to Denzel Dumfries but, as a squad member, he can certainly help build out the options.

Should Newcastle sign Ahmed Musa?

Yes

Yes

No

Able to operate either in defence or midfield, only Callum Wilson and Jonjo Shelvey have averaged more shots per game than him (1.2, via WhoScored), so it’s clear that Murphy is indeed playing his part.

A minor success story in what has been a miserable season for Newcastle recently, a new deal would make sense.
