“Not Always Understood But Undoubtedly Talented” – Willock on Maxi

|

If there aren’t already people putting that quote on t-shirts with Maxi’s face on then what’s going on in the world? Never has anybody summed up Allan Saint-Maximin more succinctly than Joe Willock in his interview with NUFC TV.

Discussing Maxi’s superb volley against Wolves, Willock was asked what he thought of it and replied “To be honest with you, I wasn’t surprised. He’s a character, a player that’s not always understood by everybody but is undoubtedly talented with the things he can do with the ball that no one else can do.”

When asked how it feels to be at Newcastle these days Willock said “I’m loving it. When I first came here I didn’t expect it to be going so brilliant so quick as a club. We’re moving on leaps and bounds. I’m really looking forward to buying into the project and hopefully helping the project get to where it needs to.”

Willock is finding himself in the starting line a lot this season with the injury to Jonjo Shelvey, and while he hasn’t quite recaptured the goalscoring form that made the Toon Army fall in love with him when he was here on loan, he is adapting his game in other ways. There were times last season where fans would not have been opposed to seeing him moved on from the club, calling his move a failure, but just as Eddie Howe transformed the club and the likes of Joelinton, Willock finds himself growing into the style of play more and more.

This is something that Willock himself acknowledges in the interview, saying: “I feel like I’m maturing a lot. I feel like my overall game has matured a lot and I think that’s a lot down to the gaffer, he’s really helped me day in day out. He’s a man who puts a lot of work in with his players.”
