News: Newcastle want 25-year-old defender

|

A report has emerged from Italy that claims Newcastle want to sign Koray Gunter from Genoa in January.

The 25-year-old is a versatile defender who is mainly used as a centre-back but can play at right-back or just in front of the defence.

Gunter is valued at £9m by the Italian side, but Newcastle already have five centre-backs, who can all play in the Premier League, and they also have three right-backs – so any move for Gunter would probably depend on departures.

Gunter was born in Germany and graduated through the Borussia Dortmund academy but then moved to Galatasaray in 2014.

He is currently on a season-long loan at Hellas Verona, and the whole deal seems doubtful.

Newcastle are well stocked in the positions Gunter plays, and at 25 it is not like he is even a young player with a lot of potential.

Newcastle do like to scout abroad for value, but I think they will be looking at forward options rather than extra defenders.

I do not see how Gunter would end up as a Newcastle player by the end of January it does not seem like a deal the Toon would be looking to do – with attacking players the primary focus for Steve Bruce.
