Newcastle United – World Cup Update – No Start For Wilson. Bruno’s Brazil.

Gareth Southgate this morning said that Harry Kane is “ok” following the scan on his ankle and will be fit enough to play against the USA tomorrow night.

That means that Newcastle striker, Callum Wilson will definitely have to wait his turn to get more game time in Qatar, however, the fact that “ok” was as good as it got from Southgate, I’d expect that means that he will be looking to withdraw the captain from play at the earliest opportunity to ensure he stays fit throughout the tournament. That could mean that we’ll see more of Wilson on the pitch.

It also means that Kieran Trippier won’t be wearing the captain’s armband against our cousins from across the pond. Trippier of course, took the armband from Kane when he was withdrawn on Monday to make way for Callum Wilson.

Switzerland got their World Cup underway with a 1-0 win over Cameroon this morning but Newcastle’s Fabian Schar didn’t make an appearance for the Swiss side. That’s despite being one of the most in-form defenders in the Premier League. But I guess it’s hard to criticise when the Swiss won the game and kept a clean sheet without him on the field. Even when Cameroon brought on more attackers to try and grab a point from the game, the Swiss reverted to a more defensive formation, bringing defenders off the bench, but our Schar still didn’t get a look in.

Later tonight sees Brazil get their competition underway with Bruno Guimaraes likely to start in the middle for the World Cup favourites. Although, given that Tite overlooked Joelinton, maybe Guimaraes won’t start because it doesn’t sound like he knows what he’s talking about. I mean, Fred over Joelinton? Come on!
