Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff is reportedly ‘yesterday’s news’ for Manchester United, as they move on from targetting the 22-year-old midfielder.

The 22-year-old midfielder, who was seen as a target by Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer in the past, is now allegedly not on the Norwegian’s wishlist when he looks to strengthen his midfield options in the summer.

Even with the signing of Bruno Fernandes in January, there will certainly be more midfielders coming through the door in the summer, with Nemanja Matic’s contract coming to an end and with Paul Pogba being extremely unlikely to stay beyond the next transfer window.

During the previous summer window, Mike Ashley lumped a £50m transfer tag on one of the club’s youth prospects, and it was enough to keep Manchester United away for the time being, but now with this season heading towards its conclusion, he has seemingly justified the Red Devil’s reluctance to pay that price.

Within the Manchester Evening News, reporter Samuel Luckhurst wrote: “Judging by the response from club suits to queries about Newcastle United’s Sean Longstaff, he is yesterday’s news”.

Should Sean Longstaff be starting every week?

Yes, he needs to play

Should play occasionally

He's not good enough

The player has even admitted to being distracted by the interest in the past, but perhaps now he knows that a move to Manchester isn’t likely for the time being, he can go back to exhausting all of his efforts into improving his performances.

After being somewhat of a revelation in the past season, he managed to tail off hugely within this campaign, and there’s no wonder why a club wouldn’t want to pay £50m for him.

He has started 13 games in the league this season, coming on in seven, proving that he isn’t necessarily the top choice in the first place. From those games, he has no goals to his name, one assist, and a passing percentage of 78.7 per cent.

WhoScored’s algorithm have given the midfielder an average of just 6.35 for his performances so far this season, which is significantly lower than the 6.86 he got last season.
