Newcastle’s interest in Goncalo Ramos seems to be back on the table following his blinding display for Portugal against Fabian Schar’s Switzerland in the World Cup.
The Magpies were first sniffing around Ramos in the summer after he netted a goal in the pre-season friendly with Benfica, but no bid was made and Ramos went on to stay in Portugal where he’s been in stunning form for his club, earning him a World Cup place in the Portugal squad.
Ramos has a release clause of €120m & was drawing interest long before the World Cup. He almost joined PSG over the summer. Benfica wanted close to €45m & that price will be higher now. Several EPL clubs have looked, including #MUFC, #NUFC, #LUFC, Wolves, Southampton & Forest.

Cristiano Ronaldo was dropped to the bench for the tie against Switzerland and 21-year-old Goncalo Ramos was put on in his place, and my word didn’t he take advantage of the situation scoring a hattrick and generally being unplayable. Schar and Akanji simply couldn’t handle him.
A report on Insidefutbol claims that Newcastle are one of several clubs monitoring the Portuguese sensation with Paris Saint Germain, Manchester United and Leeds all credited with an interest in the forward.
Benfica will be in no hurry to sell and Ramos apparently has a €120m release clause in his contract which is unlikely to be activated by any interested party. However, that’s not to say that nobody will test the water and approach Benfica with a cheeky bid to see if they can get themselves to the negotiating table.
With Newcastle’s intent to build for the future, it would, at least on paper, seem like Ramos fits the bill perfectly, however it’s always harder to prise away a player after making such a huge impact at a World Cup and as such, Newcastle may feel that a deal just isn’t viable right now.
