Newcastle ‘Enquire’ About McTominay

|

Newcastle have reportedly enquired about the availability of Manchester United midfielder, Scott McTominay. The Magpies are on the lookout for more midfield options during this January transfer window, and the Scottish international is the latest to be linked with a move to Tyneside.

The 26-year-old had made a good start to the season at Old Trafford under new boss, Erik ten Hag, but has recently fallen down the pecking order with the in-form reds. McTominay made his first team breakthrough in the 2016/17 season under Jose Mourinho and has since gone on to make 132 appearances, scoring 11 goals.

Newcastle are keen to add to their central midfield options following the injury to Jonjo Shelvey, and the tough-tackling Scot is a player that would tick a lot of boxes for Eddie Howe’s side. Players like Youri Tielemans of Leicester City, and Brighton’s Moises Caicedo, are other midfielders that have been mentioned on Tyneside, but the Toon are now said to be very keen on the Man Utd graduate.

North East reporter, Keith Downie, broke the news of Newcastle’s interest, telling Givemesport: “The one thing they’ve got in common [McTominay, Tielemans, and Caicedo] is they’ve all played in the Premier League. I think there was an enquiry made for McTominay recently, perhaps even on loan, but I don’t think Man United want to do it.”

With the Financial Fair Play rules limiting Newcastle’s options of potential signings, a loan move with a view to buy seems to be a good option for Eddie Howe and co, but Man Utd might want to bring in a midfielder of their own before allowing McTominay to make any potential move.

The Magpies may have to look elsewhere for now.
