Newcastle can beat Liverpool

Maybe it’s just the positivity following rare back to back Premier League wins but I believe Newcastle United can go to Anfield and get a result tomorrow.

Boosted by the return of availability of Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson, United do have a good set of attacking talent with Miguel Almiron more than capable of making up a dynamic front three.

Joe Willock has also been in the goals of late and if he is selected in the midfield, it again offers United another potential attacking threat and wing backs Jacob Murphy and Matt Ritchie have shown they can deliver a quality ball into the box which gives us another outlet to attack.

If this had been last season, despite the positives around our squad, Liverpool would have likely just turned up and swatted us aside but they are not the same animal this season.

They have already lost home games to three of our relegation rivals and Steve Bruce should use the triumphs of Fulham, Burnley and Brighton as inspiration for the game.

There seems to be less fluidity with their formidable three and Diogo Jota is the one man showing any true form of late. The absence of Virgil van Dijk has also been felt massively making the reds less effective at both ends of the park.

It goes without saying that we will have to be solid at the back if we are to have any chance, a better defensive display than the one against West Ham is needed but Ciaran Clark, Federico Fernandez and Paul Dummett is a solid back three with all usually reliable.

In the midfield, I feel it is imperative that Joe Willock partners Sean Longstaff with Jonjo Shelvey dropping to the bench. The legs he brings to the midfield would be massively to compete with the likes of Georginio Wijnaldum and Thiago Alcantara.

Also, Bruce needs to give the attacking players the freedom to be more proactive. Not necessarily attacking but we need to be ready to spring a counter attack. This was actually something Newcastle did well in the reverse fixture as we earned a valuable point at St. James’ Park.
