South Korea midfielder Ki Sung-Yueng is set to snub a reunion with Rafa Benitez following his release by Newcastle United and join K-League side Jeonbuk, according to Goal.

Ki was due to become a free agent in the summer but was released by the Toon on Deadline Day, having failed to find a potential suitor for his services before the January window slammed shut last Friday.

Head coach Steve Bruce rarely favoured the 31-year-old in his plans with Ki only making three Premier League appearances this term, the last of which came in the 5-0 thrashing by Leicester City in September before sustaining a minor knock.

The 113-cap international has an array of options on the table now that he has become a free agent with clubs in Europe, the Middle East and China credited with an interest, though Ki would prefer a return to Korea.

It is said that Ki is looking to return to his native country and support the revival of the K-League, where 2019 title winners Jeonbuk have presented a potential contract and salary which were met positively by the midfielder.

Ki will fly to Korea in the coming days to hold further discussions, likely paving the end to Benitez’s hopes of a reunion in China.

Jeonbuk are striving to bolster manager Jose Morais’ squad ahead of the 2020 season, as Nokseakjeonsa look to secure their fourth-straight title but noticed a weakness in the defensive midfield positive last term.

Ki made two of his three Premier League outings under Bruce in the role this season, whilst Benitez favoured the former Swansea City man in the role for 17 of his 19 outings in all competitions following his move from the Jacks in 2018.

Toon favourite Benitez had wanted to secure a reunion with the midfielder he offered a £40,000-per-week contract too upon his arrival at St. James’ Park, but a return to Korea is the 31-year-old’s greater preference at present.

In other Newcastle United news, the club are interested in signing a 24-year-old forward who is averaging 4.3 shots per 90 mins this league season.
