Howe Desperate To Keep Hold Of Coveted Striker

|

It seems like it may not just be Leeds United who have their eyes on Chris Wood as teams look to add goalscoring power to their ranks for the second half of the season.

The Athletic have revealed that Newcastle have received “enquiries” plural about Chris Wood but stopped short of naming clubs.

I think it’s safe to say we all have our opinions on the man signed last January from Burnley for £25m. He has proven to be a dependable squad member albeit not one that has set the world alight at St James’ Park.

The majority of his goals have come from the penalty spot and fans have been quick to criticise his lack of goals and lack of movement on the pitch when compared to Callum Wilson who can pull defenders out of position with ease.

I always maintained that Wood was a tactical purchase, made more to weaken Burnley as relegation rivals than to strengthen us, however, one criticism that can’t be levelled at Wood is his commitment. He always gives his all when selected and is good at hold-up play allowing our attacking midfielders time to get into dangerous positions. Add to that the fact that he’s always fit and ready to step in to deputise for Wilson and Alexander Isak.

It’s because of that last fact that Eddie Howe is determined to keep him at the club beyond January. With the spotty fitness records of Isak and Wilson, Wood remains our only recognised striker, so unless we had a replacement lined up there’s no way Howe would let him go – and he certainly wouldn’t recoup his £25m outlay if he did.
