A few Newcastle United fans have been reacting to reports by the Northern Echo claiming Tottenham Hotspur will sell Danny Rose by urging Steve Bruce to sign Jetro Willems instead.

It is alleged that Spurs chiefs are well-aware that Jose Mourinho does not see a role for Rose to play at the north London side, and will be open to holding talks with Newcastle over a permanent move for the fullback this summer.

Rose has been at St. James’ Park on loan since moving to Tyneside in January, and is keen to secure a full-time switch having settled in well to the region, despite anticipated interest from elsewhere and United being without an option to buy.

Tottenham are not expected to hold the Magpies to ransom over a fee for the England international should talks occur, given last season’s Champions League finalists want rid of the £60,000-per-week defender in the next window.

Head coach Steve Bruce, Managing Director Lee Charnley and Head of Recruitment Steve Nickson are all said to have unanimously agreed that signing Rose permanently makes sense, though a few fans would hope their plans deviate.

Some would laud the permanent signing of Eintracht Frankfurt’s Willems over Rose following the Dutchman’s half-season on loan, which was cut short through a ruptured cruciate in January.

Willems has insisted that his rehabilitation is on track following speculation in Germany that the 25-year-old would be facing nine months on the sidelines, with it still expected that he could be back on the pitch by September.

Rose was signed as the immediate replacement for Willems in January, and has since recorded fewer successful tackles (1.8 to 2.2) per 90 minutes in the Premier League, per WhoScored data, as well as fewer clearances (1.1 to 2.3), blocks (1.1 to 1.4), successful dribbles (0.3/0.8 to 1.3/2.0), key passes (0.3 to 1.5) and attempted crosses (0.8 to 1.9).

The Spurs loanee has recorded more interceptions, though, with 1.1 to 1.0.

In other Newcastle United news, a £9k-p/w defender has stated that talks will be needed over his future at St. James’ Park.
