Loads of Newcastle United fans have been reacting on social media after Federico Fernandez reflected on Saturday’s win over Southampton with a simple five-word message to the fanbase.

Steve Bruce called on the Argentine to open the action at St. Mary’s and started the 31-year-old for the 20th successive Premier League game, with Fernandez last outside of the starting XI in October’s defeat at Chelsea.

The boss’ decision over which centre-halves would feature on the south coast paid dividends as we kept our first top-flight clean sheet on the road since beating Sheffield United 2-0 on December 5, some seven away games before.

We had failed to win each of the six away games played between beating the Blades and visiting Southampton, where victory moved the Toon eight points clear of the relegation zone after Bournemouth fell to a 2-1 loss at Liverpool.

A first road win in 93 days clearly left Fernandez in high spirits, as the 31-year-old later took to Twitter to share this simple five-word message: “Massive three points. Happy Sunday!”

Fans have been responding in their droves to Fernandez’s post, including some imploring the £43,000-per-week defender to pen a new contract with his current terms due to expire this summer.

Bruce revealed last week that the club are hoping to sit down with the Argentine to discuss a new deal, but have an option to extend his current terms if Managing Director Lee Charnley is unable to find an agreement with his agent.

How long should any new contract for Fernandez be?

Should go

One year

Two years

Two years

Three years+
