Some Newcastle United fans have been destroying Sky Sports pundit Danny Mills on social media for urging Phil Jones to leave Manchester United and head for St. James’ Park.

Jones emerged as a potential summer target for Steve Bruce last week, when reports suggested the boss is keen to sound out the chances of bringing the 27-cap ex-England international to Tyneside.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to put the former Blackburn Rovers man up for sale at the close of the current season, and it would require a fee of £12million to draw him away from Old Trafford.

West Ham United were also mooted to be interested in the 28-year-old, who has featured just twice in the current Premier League campaign, and Mills would urge Jones to move on from Manchester United if the chance presents itself.

“Jones needs to get out of there and sign for a team like Newcastle,” Mills told Football Insider. “He needs a change.

Who assisted Isaac Hayden's winner vs Chelsea on Jan 18?

“It has never really happened for him at Manchester United. He has been there for a long time and has not really played an awful lot. A player that needs a new challenge and a reset to get it going again.

“Undoubtedly there is a good player in there, but maybe it is the pressure or the media attention he gets every time he does play. He has not got back to the form he showed as a young kid when he first went there.”

Some Newcastle fans vigorously disagreed with Mills’ claims, following hordes of supporters opposing the potential of signing Jones when news first broke of Bruce’s interest.
