ESPN Journalist Has The Worst Take Of 2022 So Far

|

Football is a funny old game, as they say, it’s full of differing opinions everywhere you look. Even fans of the same club have wildly different takes on things, but if I were a betting man, I’d have money on the fact that my fellow Geordies will be in agreement that this hot take from ESPN’s Julian Laurens is absolutely bonkers.

CaughtOffiside have run with a story claiming that Newcastle United need to brace themselves for losing one of their star players after this season, based on a podcast where Laurens was talking about our new fan favourite, Bruno Guimaraes. Bruno who signed for the Magpies in January and went on to bag five goals in 17 games and cementing himself as a Toon Hero may be about to enter his final season at St James’ Park if Laurens is to be believed.

Speaking on The Athletic’s Totally Football Show podcast, at around 23:58 Lauren said: “I expect Bruno Guimaraes to be even better next season, which could potentially be his last season there because there will be a point where he [is] going to be far too good for Newcastle anyway.”

It’s that last bit that really hammers home the madness of the statement. Everybody knows the plans that Amanda Staveley and her PIF-backed consortium have for Newcastle,is with the aim being to constantly improve to a point where the club is challenging for titles. So Guimaraes will be a big part of that plan. He’s already leaps and bounds ahead of what we’ve got, and more players of a similar level will come in around him,  so he won’t out-grow Newcastle, the club will grow with him.

Think before you speak next time, Laurens.
