Loads of Newcastle United supporters have been left disconsolate after the club confirmed the signing of Ludwig Francillette.

The 20-year-old defender’s arrival on Tyneside had raised much intrigue around to Deadline Day, as he was spotted at St James’ Park holding a Newcastle shirt. But the announcement was not made alongside Andy Carroll’s return and Emil Krafth’s arrival, with United only belatedly confirming his capture on Monday.

Francillette will now join Neil Readfearn’s Under 23s squad, and could make his debut in the Premier League 2 tie with Manchester United on Friday night, after impressing club staff during a trial period at Darsley Park.

The young centre-half is virtually unknown, but has spent time with French Ligue 1 side Dijon FCO and has represented Guadeloupe on the junior international stage in the past.

Supporters have also been quick to note his failed trial spell with Scottish Premiership side St Mirren, who hosted Francillette earlier in the year before opting against handing the 20-year-old a contract with the Buddies.

Comments from St Mirren supporters during his trial period suggest the young centre-back will not be forging a first-team future with Newcastle any time soon, after fans noted that he displayed poor ball control and produced an array of loose passes.

Newcastle fans may be able to get their first look at our new signing on Friday when Manchester United’s U23s travel to St James Park, but these supporters are not holding high hopes for the former Guadeloupe youth international…
