Newcastle’s former first-choice ‘keeper, Martin Dubravka has been recalled from his loan spell at Manchester United.

Dubravka famously left the Magpies in the summer to head to Old Trafford after finding out he wouldn’t be the first choice anymore following the arrival of Nick Pope. It was a move that had the Geordie faithful scratching their heads as anyone could see that he wasn’t going to be the first choice at Manchester United either, so he was leaving a position as second choice to go be third choice at another club.

Since the move, Dubravka’s appearances have been very limited at Manchester, and that could be seen as a reason why he has been recalled. The club have announced his return but not given a specific reason for the recall as yet, but the statement does end by saying he will provide extra competition for Nick Pope.

I’m not so sure that’s true, myself and here’s why…

Charlie Bennett who writes for The Chronicle has connected a couple of dots here that also sprung to my mind when I heard the news. There was talk in the summer of Dubravka being used as part of the deal and now, recalling him from loan as we look to take two players from the Leicester ranks just makes sense.

There’s a rule that says players can’t play for more than two clubs in one season, but that rule was changed to three during the coronavirus pandemic and I think it might still be the case. If I’m wrong on that, it does throw a spanner in the works of my theory, but it’s one to consider.

The Vital Podcast this week was basically just me being smug about Newcastle being mint while my Villa and Everton-supporting co-hosts held back tears.
