‘Convenient’, ‘We can dream’ – Loads of Newcastle fans react to report on club’s future

Loads of Newcastle supporters have been reacting on social media to a report by the Chronicle detailing a major Mexican sporting company’s interest in a potential takeover of the club.

The Orlegi Group, based in Cuajimalpa, have been tipped by Gustavo Mendes of Fox Sports to have placed United on their radar, having acquired Mexican top-flight outfit Santos Laguna back in 2013 when they were first formed.

Director Alejandro Irarragorri has been involved with the club for the last twelve years, though, with his first involvement with the side coming under Grupo Modelo.

In that time, Irarragorri has overseen four Liga MX titles, as well as one Copa MX and one Campeon de Campeones titles, and the construction of a new $100million (£76.8m) ground.

His success with Los Guerreros has earned Irarragorri multiple plaudits, but the 47-year-old stepped down from his role as President this week as he wishes to take his model for success out of Mexico.

There are no guarantees that he will be looking to acquire the Magpies anytime soon, but Irarragorri told a business conference earlier in the year: “Definitely [we are interested in buying clubs outside of Mexico]. That is what we’re looking for.”
