A few Newcastle United fans have been reacting on social media after Federico Fernandez reached the 150 Premier League appearance milestone.
The Argentine centre-half reached the landmark figure when fielded in the opening line-up for Saturday’s encounter with Everton, as he made his 11th-straight start in the top-flight.
Fernandez only featured in the opening line-up for 17 of his 19 Premier League appearances for the Magpies last season, after joining the club from Swansea City in a deal worth around £6million that summer.
He had been a regular fixture of the Jacks’ first-team until his departure on the back of relegation into the Championship, having made at least 28 top-flight outings with the South Wales outfit in each league season at the Liberty Stadium.
Fernandez was rarely a goal threat for the Swans, with no league campaign returning a goal-contribution rate of more than two, and no season returning more than one goal.
The 30-year-old has already bettered that record this term with two goals in his 14 appearances thus far, while assisting one strike when he was credited with creating Jamaal Lascelles’ opener in our 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Does Fernandez deserve a new contract?
Yes
No
His £43,000-per-week contract is due to expire next summer, though, and Fernandez is yet to receive any assurances from the club that they will look to renew his deal in the New Year.
