Some Newcastle supporters have been reacting on Twitter, after one user shared a quote by Alan Shearer on the future of Rafa Benitez, taken from an interview between the club icon and the Chronicle.
The legendary striker has been speaking with the local press after backing their ‘Rafa Must Stay’ campaign, which has been set up ahead of our penultimate home game of the season as a way of showing the club, and Benitez, how much the Spaniard means to us all.
If a new contract is not offered to the gaffer, then Liverpool’s trip to St James’ Park this weekend could be the last time we see him take charge of the Magpies on home soil, with his current deal set to expire in the summer.
Before he signs a new deal, however, he wants assurances from owner Mike Ashley as to what will be on offer going forward, otherwise the European, FA, and Italian Cup winning manager will call quits on his time on Tyneside.
Shearer, though, feels the board would be crazy to see Benitez pack his bags and search for a new manager.
“Rafa has done a magnificent job again this season in securing Premier League football,” the Match of the Day regular said. “Newcastle have an excellent manager with so much experience and success who loves this area and this club so it would be crazy to allow someone of his calibre to leave.
