Another Win – Another Sulking Rival Manager

|

Marco Silva has become the latest Premier League boss to react angrily to a defeat to Newcastle this season. Just two weeks after Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta’s childish behaviour on the touchline during his team’s 0-0 draw with the Toon, Silva launched into a tirade at officials after Newcastle’s late 1-0 win at St James’ Park.

Of course, complaining about referees and laying blame on everyone else is nothing new, but opposing managers seem to have an extra gripe after failing to beat Eddie Howe’s dogged team this season. Silva’s complaints, however, take things to a new level, as the Portuguese reckoned that his team should have had a penalty…. just before they got a penalty!

“I have to mention the moment of the penalty, not because we missed, that can happen, but it is difficult to understand in 30 seconds two decisions in the box. Two clear decisions.

‘It is difficult to understand how the referee didn’t see one, at least one. But what is more difficult to understand is how the VAR cannot see the first penalty. Because that has to be a penalty and a red card for the player. Andreas is going to finish and (Burn) pulled him – it is a clear penalty and red card. It made a huge impact on the game.” via [DailyMail]

Of course, there was even more drama to come from the resulting penalty, with former Toon forward, Aleksandar Mitrovic touching the ball twice during his strike, resulting in the goal being ruled out. It was just the first piece of drama in what was an exciting afternoon on Tyneside.

Despite having 63% possession and registering 20 shots, the Magpies had to wait until the 89th minute to finally grab the goal that secured victory. It was record-signing, Alex Isak that would prove to be the hero, nodding in a Callum Wilson cross to send the Toon Army into raptures.

The win continued Newcastle’s unbeaten run and moved them back up to 3rd in the table, putting an end to Fulham’s five-match winning streak in the process. The Cottagers now sit 6th in the table. Cheer up Marco – it could be worse!

After the match, the Sky Sports cameras captured a hilarious reaction from Jacob Murphy as Silva brushed past him to get at the referee – brilliant!
