Newcastle United and the Premier League’s record ever goalscorer Alan Shearer was one of the first two men to be inducted into the Premier League hall of fame.

Alongside Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, Shearer was the first to be given the new award and rightly so too.

There should not be any debate about Shearer’s position in the hall of fame but such is the level of disrespect put on the Geordie’s name; some have disagreed citing that he did not win enough in his playing career.

The man could have played for any club in the world, he could have gone to Manchester United and win countless amounts of trophies and no doubt scored even more goals because of the calibre of players he was playing with.

But no, Shearer had dreamt of playing for his boyhood club and he would rather partner the likes of Shola Ameobi whilst wearing the famous black and white than helping Sir Alex Ferguson win titles at Old Trafford. A true icon.

Shearer boasts the incredible stat of being the only player in the division to have scored over 100 goals for two separate sides; Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United.

Speaking after being awarded a place in the hall of fame, Shearer said:

“When you look at some of the unbelievable players to have graced the Premier League week in, week out, year in, year out, I feel very honoured to join the hall of fame.

“I have to thank all of my teammates, as well as the managers and coaches that I’ve worked with.

“All I ever wanted to be was a professional footballer. It was my dream to score at St. James’ Park, to wear the number nine black and white shirt and it was fantastic. I enjoyed every minute of it.”

His record of 260 Premier League goals remains untouched since his retirement, which really shows the enormity of his achievement.
