Had super sub Joe Willock not found the net with his 95th minute effort, Toon fans would rightly still be seething with the disgraceful VAR call that would have cost their side a vital point at Anfield.

Callum Wilson seen his effort saved by Alison and the ball bounced straight back onto his arm before he put the ball into the empty net.

From less than a yard out, with his cards as close to his body as physically possible, how on earth can it be given as a handball.

VAR is not the only problem at play here. The rule book is incorrect and completely devoid of any common sense. Any fan who knows football knows that goal should not be chalked off and yet the rule makers deem it to be the case.

Why is it one rule for attackers and another for defenders? I find it incredible that if the ball strikes the defender on the arm when in a natural position it is rightly not a handball offence but with an attacker as shown by Wilson, it is.

In a rare event, Steve Bruce made a good point in his post-match press conference when he bemoaned the lack of common sense in the decision making. They are trying to turn football robotic and it completely saps the life out of the game.

Whether somebody gets called offside for being a toenail off or a ridiculous handball claim, VAR is taking a huge chunk of the excitement out of football and we should not let it slide.

In a week where football fans came together so powerfully to see off the European Super League and the greedy owners behind the ludicrous idea, is it time that we put allegiances aside to bin off VAR?

This is not just about Newcastle getting a rough deal and United have had our fair share of lucky VAR shouts with a late penalty at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and a Fulham sending off that was later rescinded.
