The Championship season continued with the latest round of games played over the weekend.
Newcastle’s defeat allowed Brighton to draw level on points at the top of the table. Rotherham are done with Wigan second bottom. Blackburn’s draw saw them drop back into the bottom three.

Brighton moved level on points with leaders Newcastle on Friday with a 3-0 win over Derby at the Amex Stadium. Defeat for the Magpies means only goal difference keeps Albion from the summit. The Rams’ poor form continued with just one of the last nine won.
A first defeat in 10 meant Newcastle missed the chance to restore a three point lead over Brighton on Saturday. However, Fulham’s play-off bid was boosted by a 3-1 win at St James’ Park to close to within two points of the top six. The Magpies were already three down before Daryl Murphy’s consolation with the Cottagers also missing an added time penalty.
Goals in each half were enough to see Aston Villa to a 2-0 win – a fourth in the last five – against play-off chasing Sheffield Wednesday. Defeat for the 10 man Owls saw the advantage they hold over Fulham – who also have a game in hand – cut to two points.
Barnsley were denied a first win in six by an added time Ipswich equaliser. This 1-1 draw at Oakwell was a sixth straight draw for the Tractor Boys who have drawn seven from an eight game unbeaten run.
The four game unbeaten Brentford run was ended by promotion chasing Huddersfield after they went away from Griffin Park with a 1-0 win. Town’s victory kept the automatic promotion chances alive.
Burton’s bid to stay in the Championship was improved after a 1-0 win over local rivals Nottingham Forest. The Brewers’ victory at the City Ground extended an unbeaten run to six with Forest just two points above the bottom three after a second successive defeat.
A last minute equaliser denied Cardiff a win against struggling Birmingham. The Bluebirds have now gone four – with three drawn – without a win but remain safe in midtable with the Blues just six points above the bottom three.
Leeds’ unbeaten run was extended to six but the promotion chasing Whites had to settle for a 0-0 draw with QPR – who have lost just once in six – at Elland Road.
A late equaliser for managerless 10 man Norwich denied Blackburn – who dropped back into the bottom three as a result despite extending the unbeaten run to five – another win with the points shared in a 2-2 draw at Carrow Road. Rovers had come from a goal down to lead but the Canaries equaliser saw us back into the bottom three on goal difference.
Preston’s play-off hopes were revived after the 3-0 thrashing of promotion chasing Reading at Deepdale. North Ends victory closed the gap on the top six to six points. The Royals’ third defeat in five means a potential play-off could come under threat.
Wigan’s survival hopes were dealt a blow whereas Bristol City’s were given a potentially priceless boost courtesy of a late winner at the DW Stadium. The Latics are now four points from safety remaining second bottom but the Robins climb above Blackburn and out of the relegation zone after a first win in eight.
A first win in seven for Wolves was secured after a 1-0 win Rotherham. Wolves victory moved up to 20th and a point above the bottom three. The Millers are rock bottom of the league and now 21 points from safety.
