Star Striker Earns New Deal Making Him A Top Earner

|

David Ornstein of The Athletic has said that Callum Wilson has signed a new contract at Newcastle.

Wilson returned from injury on Saturday against Fulham, getting his name on the scoresheet with a typical predatory tap-in. He also struck the woodwork and saw a curling effort drift just wide of the post. He was withdrawn on the hour mark by Eddie Howe who obviously had one eye on the Brentford game on Saturday at St James’ Park.

The two-year extension comes with a pay increase which brings him in line with the club’s top earners as well as added responsibility in helping the young strikers develop, there’s also an option of a further extension depending on a variety of factors.

This season Wilson has three goals in four games for the Magpies proving that when he’s fit he is a key player. Newcastle’s style of play suits Wilson perfectly and if we could keep him fit there’s no doubt he’d be competing for the golden boot and likely a place in Southgate’s World Cup squad.

Should Wilson Go To The World Cup?

No. Keep him fit for club

Yes. Gives England a better chance.

The 30-year-old forward has struggled for fitness ever since signing for the Magpies in 2020 from Bournemouth for a fee of £20m after he turned down higher wages at Aston Villa to join Newcastle and quickly established himself as a fan favourite, eventually taking the legendary number 9 shirt.

Many pundits agree that Wilson is probably the second-best English striker behind Harry Kane and is only held back by his poor fitness record. As good as it would be to see Newcastle’s number 9 representing England at the World Cup, I’d rather he stayed home and fit. With Wilson in attack, we are guaranteed goals and goals win games.
