Wilson Admits Howe Was Right To Sub Him Off

|

Callum Wilson marked his return from injury with a goal at Craven Cottage on Saturday, but probably should have had more than just one to his name.

Before registering his goal on eleven minutes, Wilson had hit the post following a good save from a Dan Burn strike. He also curled an effort just wide of the upright from the penalty spot which could have crept in the top corner on another day.

Wilson was substituted around the hour mark and looked visibly annoyed that he’d been asked to make way for Ryan Fraser. It’s understandable in the sense that the way the game was unfolding it seemed very likely that Wilson would bag himself at least another goal if he were allowed to continue, but with the game in the bag and this being Wilson’s first game back, it was the right call by Eddie Howe to withdraw him and make sure he’s fit to face Brentford.

Wilson told The Chronicle It was just go out and play, the way the game panned out you get frustrated.

“We had a little laugh on the side about it. When you are 4-0 up and you are on the pitch and in the emotion of the game you are disappointed.

“There’s goals there, I should have had a hat-trick but then when you sit and think logically about the decision you respect it. You understand the thinking behind it. I am grateful to the manager.

“He has made his decision and I stand by it. I’ve been back a week and it has been a long process. It’s been a long process. I have been on the pitch a week and done all the specific work and drills.

“I feel I could have played 90 minutes but I guess they had a plan.”
