He tweeted on Sunday that the Saudi consortium haven’t even considered failing the owners and directors test, showing just how confident they are in the deal going through.

Smith said:

We’re well past two months since news first broke that Mike Ashley was finally going to sell up and give us all exactly what we’re wanting –  a fresh new era at St James’ Park.

His 13-year reign has been full of disappointment, summed up by two relegations to the Championship and a serious lack of progress on the pitch.
