Newcastle were left ruing a missed penalty as an energetic Everton side saw them off 3-0

Two goals from Anichebe and one from, of all people, Phil Neville were enough to put paid to a below par Newcastle side.

However, things could have been very different. With the score still at 1-0 Dyer was fouled in the box but, after a short delay so Emre could make a tit of himself, Martins blasted the spot kick well over the bar.

But Everton were good value for their win and despite Newcastle playing some entertaining football at times their defensive frailties were once again highlighted.

And the need to strengthen the defence increased in urgency when Peter Ramage limped off with what appeared to be a hamstring injury. And with no signings possible before the New Year`s Day game with Man U, it`s unlikely to be a happy start to the New Year for
Toon fans.

Glenn Roeder
‘We’re having to put young players in, perhaps before they’re ready, and it’s a baptism of fire.

‘I’m sure Everton boss David Moyes would understand. He wouldn’t be happy with the type of goals that were conceded by us.

‘Defensively, we need to bring players in and we are looking at targets.’
