Newcastle Being Strongly Backed For European Spot

|

After Newcastle’s extremely convincing back-to-back wins, the question of whether or not the Magpies can grab a European spot this season has once again reared its head.

Eddie Howe’s men remain one of the top-form sides in the Premier League since the turn of the year, despite a run of draws at the start of this season. St James’ Park has become a fortress again with just one defeat in 15 games on home soil. We’ve scored nine goals in the last two games and find ourselves fifth in the league with just one defeat this season which was as controversial as they come.

As much as we can look at the points dropped this season as being bad luck and questionable refereeing/VAR decisions, the fact is that’s not going to change the points tally now, so we have to build on the points we have and that’s exactly what we’re doing.

Key to the upturn in form has been the return of Bruno Guimaraes who absolutely oozes class. With his sublime flick over the defence for Miguel Almiron’s Goal Of The Season contender at Fulham last week and two goals of his own on Saturday against Brentford, his contribution can’t be overstated. Arsenal are sitting pretty at the top of the league but I bet their fans are still kicking themselves for missing out on Bruno.

If Bruno can stay fit and stay in form all season there’s every chance we could sneak a European spot this season. That being said, I’d be just as happy if we finish 10th as I believe in what the new owners are doing and their mission this season is simply one of improvement. Improvement on and off the pitch, and it is already clear to see that that’s mission accomplished already.

Next season I’d say we have to be pushing for Europe, but this season is a free-hit for Eddie Howe, and as long as we finish top-half I’d call it successful.
