Manchester United 0-0 Newcastle United – What Was Said

|

Sunday saw Newcastle pick up a point and a clean sheet at Old Trafford after an eventful game.

In Eddie Howe’s post-match press conference, the Newcastle gaffer gave his thoughts on the performance and gave his opinion on a couple of the main talking points.

Howe was asked, first of all, if he thought Newcastle could have won the game to which he said: “I agree, I think especially first half we had our moments. Joe’s hit the woodwork twice and that’s a big moment in the game. Callum Wilson’s penalty shout is a strong one.”

Later on, Howe was asked his opinion on the “goal” that Ronaldo scored after he took the ball from Pope who was setting himself to take the free-kick: “I could see it at the time and it was clear Fabi (Schar) wasn’t taking the kick, allowing Nick (Pope) to do it.

“For me it was clear that Nick was waiting to deliver the free kick and then obviously, Ronaldo’s taken the ball off him. That would have been a very difficult goal to swallow if that stood. For me the ball clearly wasn’t in play.”

Did Newcastle Do Enough To Win Against Man Utd?

No. A Draw Was Right

Yes

No. Probably should have got beat.

With another game coming on Wednesday, there were questions asked over the fitness of some players, particularly as Newcastle seemed to run out of steam towards the end of the game. There’s also the set-backs to both Allan Saint-Maximin and Alexander Isak, the latter of whom, Howe doesn’t expect to see in action before the break for the World Cup next month.

On Kieran Trippier and Joe Willock, Howe said “Tripps is fine, injury-wise. He was suffering a bit of illness coming into the game. We had a bit of illness in the camp, Joe Willock hadn’t trained for two or three days so he lost his place in the team due to that. Tripps was ill overnight but he’s fine now I think, so hopefully, a couple of days rest and he’ll be good.”
