I think most fans were surprised to see our captain`s omission from the England squad yesterday.
The fact that Jamaal has played a key role in keeping things tight at the back this campaign is only part of it. He is also a leader, and looks far more composed and assured than someone like Alfie Mawson who has been part of a Swansea side that have conceded 42 goals this season.
Alan Shearer was among those who expressed his surprise at the centre back missing out for the friendlies against Holland and Italy. The legend certainly feels Lascelles is deserving of a call up, like many others.
Still, the one positive is that he will be fit and fresh for another crucial match against Huddersfield later this month. We won`t have to worry about him getting injured in a needless friendly whilst away on international duty.
The reaction on Twitter from fans to Gareth Southgate`s decision to snub the 24-year-old was one of bemusement, leaving many questioning the England manager`s judgement:
Crazy how he is constantly overlooked just because its not a fashionable club

He deserves it but in many ways I`m pleased. We need him and it would be our luck for him to get injured.

Gareth Southgate should stick to what he’s good at – Missing penalties in semi-finals. Shocking manager.
