Under the rules of the game, a player is free to talk with other clubs,unless given permission, in the final 6 months of the contract (im sure it’s still that), Which leaves us with 6 months to get a new contract sorted or to agree to a sale….
In my opinion, a sale is too costly to the club as we’d lose a player of such quality, that it would take a minimum of a fee of £10 million to replace him and that’s before wages come into it.. eg. a wage of 40k a year for 4 years would work out at approx. £20 million all in.., offering Enrique a contract of £60k a week over 4 years would cost us, just over £12 million.. Mmm, something to ponder in the boardroom there..
I can see the point about not raising the wage of one player too much as it can cause mutiny in the ranks but the more improved the squad get then surely any supposed wage cap should rise? Maybe have an incentive in a players contract where bonuses pay the more lucrative figures of a contract. Bonuses for finishing higher in the league, cup etc. Although in fairness, they probably have done already.
For me, the most important news over the summer is keeping our best players or improving their contracts, new strikers follows closely behind…
We have the Carroll cash plus more I should imagine and figures of wages taking up most of the pot is wide of the mark i reckon as surely we can’t take the full term of a contract off the transfer fund in one go?

Renewing Enrique,Nolan and Barton’s contracts (bearing in mind they already have contracts), shouldn’t affect the budget much. Even increasing a wage by £20k a week here would give them a massive pay rise and only cost us an extra Million pound per player a season..
Much cheaper to do that way plus the bonus that they are settled,established premier league players…
That said, we will be inundated with rumour and media garbage, all designed to cause unrest here, so we should just hope that our best players do get offered a fair deal and accept, if not then i predict a mass exodus like a domino rally where Nolan goes followed by Barton, the same applies to Enrique with Jonas speaking highly of his partnership with him recently…
