Many Newcastle supporters have been sharing who they would rather lose out of Isaac Hayden and Jonjo Shelvey, after it emerged the duo were both targets of West Ham United.
The Irons have been linked with the midfield pair regular throughout 2019, but manager Manuel Pellegrini had pinpointed FC Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes as his priority target following a successful loan spell with Everton.
However, Pellegrini’s side saw an initial £18million offer rejected by the La Liga giants, and were turned down by the 25-year-old midfielder himself when they returned with an improved £20million offer.
Before Gomes turned down the chance to move to East London, though, it emerged that Hayden was being eyed as the number one alternative to the former Portugal international regular, with Shelvey the back-up option.
It was not because the Arsenal product would be cheaper thanks to his desires to secure a move back down south for personal reasons, as both of our midfielders are thought to have been valued by Magpies chiefs at £15million.
But given it was Hayden who started more often under Rafa Benitez in the recent season, it would be a significant loss if we do lose the 24-year-old this summer. Whereas Shelvey has it within himself to excel, but his better days are often here or there.
