Wilson Worry – Callum Sits Out England Training

|

Newcastle’s number 9 has sat out training with the England squad in Qatar.

It is news that the Toon Army have heard many times in the past – and news that will have fans worrying as they wait for more information on the ‘minor issue’. Callum Wilson has, unfortunately, spent a lot of his Newcastle career in the physio room, and the hope is that this setback won’t result in him returning there. [The Chronicle vain MSN]

Wilson, who has made two substitute appearances at the World Cup, was due to be part of a training session for squad members not involved in Sunday’s 3-0 win over Senegal but failed to join his teammates on the field for the light session.

It is thought that the injury is not a major issue, and has been reported to be more of a precautionary move. Wilson is playing back-up to England captain Harry Kane in Qatar, and Gareth Southgate is surely not willing to take any risks with the former Bournemouth man.

Having missed a large chunk of last season with a knee injury, the striker has returned in scintillating form for his club this season, bagging 6 goals from 11 appearances as his team flies high in the table.

Hopefully, the minor setback is just that. His goal-scoring exploits this season have shown just how important he is to the cause, and with Alexander Isak set for a return to action, it would be great to see the duo terrify opposition defences in the coming months.
