With Newcastle almost on course for Mike Ashley’s hope of a minimum 17th place finish in the premier league, eyes are distracted tomorrow towards a romantic part of the game. The FA Cup.

The cup was a thing of dreams for all budding footballers back in the day and an escape from the usual dour league campaigns for the majority of the rest of us.

The buzz of crowding round a radio after the cup draw on a Monday dinner time some weeks prior then being realised in the flesh with the big guns attracted to your ground on cup day.

More often than not, the dream died that day but it was there the following year again.

Since Ashley bought us, the cup has played second or third fiddle to achieving a league position ample enough to line somebodies pocket with our efforts in these competitions nothing short of a disgrace.

With Rafa Benitez joining us though, thoughts have turned to us actually being bothered to compete in these things again although the proof will be in the pudding of which pool of players will be deemed fit by a medical department that may or may not have orders from above. Who knows.

Anyway with division 4 side Luton coming up the road to St James’, thoughts have been with former magpie midfielder Rob Lee’s two sons who play for them and being doing quite well but the reality of this is, that we should win by at least 2 or 3 if we fancy this.

Forget shocks and the ability to provide the ammunition for match of the day for the next 40 years or so, this is all about us.
