Youngster Alan O’Brien became the fourth O’Brien to play for Newcastle’s first team, and he has expressed his delight at getting a taste of the action in the FA Cup defeat of Mansfield.

The Irish winger wants to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Liam and Andy who both gave the club great service. How can we ever forget Liam’s ‘Who Put The Ball In The Mackem’s Net?’.

Alan has been producing some impressive displays for the reserve side this season and Graeme Souness rewarded the youngster by sending him on in the closing stages of he 1-0 win.

O’Brien: ‘It was unbelievable. I didn’t expect to get on but when the manager gave me the call I was well pleased. I didn’t get much sleep on Friday night after being named in the squad. It was just running about my head that I might get a chance and I was really nervous about it to be honest.

‘It was a great feeling when the manager told me I was going on. It was a great buzz to actually run out there.’
