‘What a joke we’ve become’ – Many Newcastle fans react to ‘Really uninspiring’ £5m target

Many Newcastle supporters have been reacting on social media to reports by The Sun, which suggested United are plotting a move for Everton midfielder James McCarthy.

Steve Bruce is believed to be behind the Magpies’ interest in the out-of-favour Republic of Ireland international, as he feels the Toon need extra options in the centre of the field having been given time to assess who is on offer.

Everton are actively looking to find a buyer for the fringe midfield anchor as he has now entered the final year of his £50,000-a-week contract, and are willing to accept a cut-price figure amid interest from the Magpies and Crystal Palace.

Newcastle chiefs are thought to be considering the potential inclusion of any of our fringe players in a deal for McCarthy, who is open to leaving Marco Silva’s Blues this summer in a bid to kick-start his career.

The Glasgow-born 28-year-old has seen his game time on Merseyside dwindle in recent years as injuries took hold of his career, with groin and hamstring strains ruling him out of 21 games in the 2016/17 season, a knee and hamstring blow ruling him out of 32 games in the ‘17/18 season, and a Tibia and Fibula fracture ruling him out of 39 games over the ‘17/18 and ‘18/19 seasons.

McCarthy made his long-awaited return to fitness at the turn of the year, but only made Silva’s Everton bench on eight occasions before the end of term, with one of those appearances resulting in an outing on the field.

Bruce’s interest in McCarthy is not new, either, as the new Toon boss had identified the 28-year-old and his Everton teammate Yannick Bolasie as players of interest ahead of his appointment.

Rafa Benitez, likewise, had considered a move for McCarthy should he have signed a contract extension, with the Spaniard reportedly considering the Republic of Ireland midfielder as an option worth pursuing.

Newcastle fans reacting to the latest reports suggesting a £5million bid may be forthcoming are not overly keen to see the Magpies lodge an official offer for the injury-plagued anchor, though.

Here’s how these fans reacted…
