As we told you last week … Souness would not be making any moves on players this transfer window. Not only did Freddy Shepherd put a block on money, but with added pressure being put on the manager, Shepherd didn’t want anyone to leave, either.

The manager, despite saying he had a talk with the chairman last week about potential targets, finally came clean today to say there would not be any last-minute activity in the transfer window. As if we didn’t know already, and the whole thing was nothing more than another load of bull.

Souness: ‘We have got nothing.

‘In the 17 months I’ve been here, we have had a net spend of somewhere in the region of £30million. That’s a lot of money for any club to spend.

‘As I understand it, we have got nothing to spend. We have not been pursuing anything in this window, because I was told very early on that we had nothing to spend unless somebody left.

‘No one’s left, so we have nothing to spend.’

So why not say that last week, rather than waffle on about central defenders and strikers being a priority? Does the man REALLY think the average Toon fan cannot see through him?
