“Well deserved” – Lots of Newcastle fans react to Twitter post by £43k-p/w “absolute colossus”

Lots of Newcastle United fans have been reacting on Twitter to a recent post by Federico Fernandez, after the Argentine took to the social media platform to react to club icon Alan Shearer naming him in his Premier League Team of the Week.

Shearer has lauded Fernandez for his battling performance in Matchweek 45 as we held Manchester City to a 2-2 draw at St. James’ Park, where Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions were never allowed to move more than one goal ahead.

Fernandez was key to our result from a defensive point of view, as the £43,000-per-week centre-half registered a game-high five interceptions and 10 clearances, along with two successful tackles and won a sole aerial duel, per WhoScored figures.

The 30-year-old also made the third-most total passes of our outfield players on Saturday with 23, and found a teammate in Black and White with 14 of those.

Facing the Sky Blues at St. James’ Park was Fernandez’s fifth-straight start under Steve Bruce, after missing our win over Manchester United and trip to Chelsea in October, and having played just 23 minutes from the bench in the seven league games proceedings the Red Devils encounter.

Fernandez was not the only Newcastle player lauded by Shearer in his Team of the Week for Matchweek 45, either, with Martin Dubravka and Jonjo Shelvey also included.

Who was our top performer against Man City?

Dubravka

Fernandez

Shelvey

Almiron

Shearer praised Dubravka for producing some top-draw saves to deny City at the weekend, and felt that Shelvey caused Guardiola’s side plenty of problems before hitting a ‘stunning’ equaliser.

Here are some of the messages shared as fans reacted to Fernandez’s post…

In other Newcastle United news, a 5 ft 7 Toon man is keen to leave St. James’ Park.
