Steve Bruce is the man the club want as the next manager but he may cost £5million in compensation, according to The Times (also reported by The Chronicle).

They claim he has asked Sheffield Wednesday for permission to speak to Newcastle about becoming their new manager.

Bruce asked Dejphon Chansiri, the Wednesday chairman and owner, to be allowed to discuss the vacant role at his boyhood club but, the Championship side are reluctant to grant him his wish.

The 58-year-old returned to management in February when he took over the Owls and The Times believe that a compensation clause of more than £5 million was included in his contract.

Bruce appears to be improving as a manager with each job he takes, according to Transfermarkt he has achieved 1.61 points per game while in his current job, compared to 1.60 in his previous role at Aston Villa. Before that, he achieved 1.47 points per game while at Hull and 1.16 as Sunderland boss.

Despite the marked improvement, the Newcastle supporters do not believe spending £5million on him would be considered as value for money, some took to Twitter to share their opinions.

One sarcastically stated he is ‘worth every penny’ whilst another added ‘we’d be mad’ to appoint him for that much money.
