Some Newcastle supporters have been reflecting on the efforts of Yoshinori Muto following the climax of his first Premier League season.
The 5 ft 8 centre-forward joined the Magpies from FSV Mainz 05 last summer in a deal which set United back a reported £9.5million. He also signed a £54,000-a-week contract upon his arrival, which made the 26-year-old our second-highest paid player – only behind the £70,000-a-week Jonjo Shelvey.
At the time of his capture, Muto had just returned from the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where he made one appearance for Japan – coming in their 1-0 defeat against Poland.
He had scored 23 times and assisted a further eleven during his three-year stint in the Bundesliga with Mainz, though, but his goal involvement on Tyneside has been more like his strike rate at the World Cup.
All in, Muto scored once for us and failed to carve a successful chance for one of his United teammates. However, the 29-cap international only played 593 minutes across his 18 appearances in all competitions – the equivalent of 6.5 full games.
With Salomon Rondon, Ayoze Perez and Miguel Almiron coming on strongly in the second half of the season on the back of the Paraguayan’s arrival, it became even more difficult for the Japan international to make his mark under Rafa Benitez.
In the Premier League, Muto only managed to feature in six games after the turn of the year, with his longest appearance coming on the final day away to Fulham.
Muto also only recorded six shots in the league across the campaign, as well as a total of five key passes, ten successful aerial duels, and nine successful dribbles.
Most fans on Reddit, however, have backed the 26-year-old to have a more significant impact next season…
