“We can but hope” – Many Newcastle fans react to update on “horrendous” player

|

Many Newcastle United fans have been reacting on social media, after it was shared that Aston Villa could be without goalkeepers Tom Heaton and Jed Steer for the Toon’s visit later this month.

Heaton has been sidelined since before the international break after sustaining a calf injury in training ahead of Villa’s West Midlands derby at Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Steer replacing him in goal.

Steer, though, was only able to last seven minutes at Molineux before suffering a calf injury of his own, and has since been ruled out for two months after scans on Monday revealed the extent of the blow.

Villa boss Dean Smith is hopeful that Heaton will be back in contention for our trip to Birmingham a week on Monday, when he could also see Jack Grealish, Matt Target and Bjorn Engels return to selection.

But Orjan Nyland is keen to rival Heaton for the number jersey at Villa Park, after making his first appearance of the season when he replaced Steer in goal in the Villans’ 2-1 loss to Wolves.

Nyland also hinted toward Heaton facing two to three weeks on the sidelines, which could force him out of our trip to last season’s Championship Play-Off winners later this month.

Nyland had been Smith’s first-choice at Villa Park last season following his summer 2018 move from Ingolstadt, playing 23 times and conceding 34 goals to six clean sheets.
