… Aston Villa caretaker-manager Roy Aitken.

The man was a legend north of the border at Celtic, but he had a shocking season when he arrived on Tyneside, and bottled it big-time in the play-off matches against the Mackems.

But the former Aberdeen boss insists he is in the running for the job at Villa Park.

Aitken: ‘I’m in a situation where as far as I’m concerned, I’ve been asked to take on the job until further notice. All the other distractions don’t really affect me because I’m long enough in the tooth to know what football’s all about.

‘This is a great job and you do it to the best of your ability. That’s what I’m trying to do and I’m getting a good response from the players.’

Aitken has taken temporary charge at Villa Park since David O’Leary’s departure and, with the Premiership season looming, could be in charge for the start of the new campaign.
