Newcastle United haven’t had it going their way all season, but with a win on the weekend they look to have pulled away from the relegation zone, and they’ve also added another player beyond the season.
Federico Fernandez started alongside Jamaal Lascelles as they went onto beat the in-form Southampton on the weekend. The Argentinian put in a great performance which saw him earn a clean sheet, and would have made a lot of fans anxious as to whether they would be losing him this year.
Fear not Newcastle fans: he’s signed up. The club had the option of giving the former Swansea man another season on Tynecastle, and they’ve activated that clause.
Should the club have offered Fernandez a longer contract?

The 31-year-old has now notched up 47 appearances for the Magpies – with 25 coming this campaign – having scored twice and assisting as many.

Fans may have had their beef with Steve Bruce this season, but after 29 games, they are in the final eight of the FA Cup, and have amount 35 points from 29 games.
As much as the style of football may be a bugbear for the club, when Bruce took over, not many fans could be frustrated by this.
